I wonder why more of those weren't built; after all, they'd probably be better for diesel commuter rail than B-B custom-built diesels . . . top speed 75 mph, greater tractive force and acceleration (especially thanks to the AC traction), and lighter per axle than anything newer than an F40PH (a good deal under 70,000 lbs per axle) . . . Metra should have picked up a unit like these to replace their F40Cs instead of the MP36PH-3C (which is heavier per axle, and that resulted in being banned from certain parts of the Metra network; an SD70MAC-HEP would be far better accelerating/decelerating as well as easily push-pull longer, heavier trains) . . . |
