The state Department of Transportation has scheduled three public hearings as part of the environmental assessment and environmental impact evaluation for the proposed 62-mile New Haven-Hartford-Springfield high-speed passenger rail project.

Improvements along the rail corridor are considered necessary “in order to provide an alternative means of travel that is convenient, frequent and reliable,” the DOT said.

“Issues that have been analyzed in depth include operational characteristics, infrastructure needs, transit-oriented development ... the effects of the alternatives on noise, air, water quality, and cultural and recreational resources,” it said.

The study also looked at “other social, economic and environmental effects, and capital and operating costs.”

The evaluation, which would be funded largely with federal transportation aid, is available for public review and comment. A 45-day comment period began May 8 and ends June 22. The document is available at www.nhhsrail.com.

Copies also are available at city or town clerk offices and public libraries in municipalities along the rail corridor, the DOT said. The project is DOT State Project No. 170-2296.

Comments can be submitted at the project website or mailed to Mark W. Alexander, transportation assistant planning director, P.O. Box 317546, Newington 06131-7546.

Comments will be accepted at the three public hearings. They are at 7 p.m. June 7 in Torp Theatre in Davidson Hall at Central Connecticut State University, 1615 Stanley St., New Britain; 7 p.m. June 13 at Asnuntuck Community College, 170 Elm St., Enfield; and 7 p.m. June 14 at North Haven High School, 221 Elm St.
