Remember, back then operating crews only worked 1 or at most two divisions meaning a days pay for far less than 8 hrs. An example from 1962 on a much slower train--depart Marion IA 2:50 AM arr Chicago @ 8:50. Lv Chicago 7PM arr Marion 12:43 AM. So within 24 hrs two 6 hour shifts counting as 4 days pay, then two full days off. This was Cdr, trnm, flagman, baggageman. Engineer, Fireman worked on the single division Chgo-Savanna. two 3 1/2 hr shifts count as two days. |
