Harrison — If vigilance is the price of freedom, so, it seems, is the occasional transit delay.

PATH service between Newark Penn Station and the World Trade Center was suspended in both directions for 20 minutes at lunchtime today, after officials said one passenger overheard two others theorizing about the potential havoc a grenade could wreak on Times Square.

The passenger overheard the couple while all three were standing on platform of the Harrison Station at 11:50 a.m. said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The passenger then called police, and service was halted for approximately 20 minutes while officers questioned the couple and determined there was no threat, Coleman said. Residual delays resulted, Coleman said.

Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the Port Authority Police Department, said the couple told officers they were unhappy with their jobs in Times Square, and were making idle chatter, unaware that anyone was listening in. They were not charged.

"It was an inappropriate comment," Della Fave said.

Transit riders are constantly reminded, "If you see something, say something," and Della Fave said the passenger did the right thing. Despite the inconvenience of false alarms, Della Fave said ignoring any suspicious activity could let a real threat go undetected.

"You don't want to take that chance," he said."
