All this really does is highlight two problems. The lack of cooperation with police departments that may have officers closer to the scene, and the massive blind spot in the CCTV system which TAs like WMATA are faced with on their trains.

At this point it's probably safer for the criminal to commit whatever crime on the train as it arrives in a station than to victimize someone on the platform in full view of the cameras. The addition of cameras viewing the inside of the car are a good step in the right direction, but as yet they're only good for an after-the-fact casebuilding effort. Ultimately there *needs* to be a way in which video can be offloaded from the car in near real-time for viewing by the officers that will respond. I would suggest that when the passenger alarm is triggered it should offload the prior 30 seconds of feed from the car's cameras, alert a central police dispatcher, and pop those video feeds up for the dispatcher to view. But that of course would require them to have ancillary wayside data system capable of supporting that sort of data, and they can't even get their main signalling system to keep track of little things like trains.
