The R17 version had m.g. blower cooled resistor grids, thus that jet blower noise you would hear on the car at Branford when the controller is moved to switching and up. If the R12 had the same group switchboard as the R10 you would hear a loud pneumatic clunk upon powering up. Motor noise was the same depending on whether equipped with mixed GE and WH , compressor speeds were faster on R17, all had Wabco A1 brake packages with cast iron brake shoes. Except for the motor generator blowers and compressor speeds, you wouldn't know which was which unless you heard the doors close and open.
