The Chicago Transit Authority announced yesterday that between June and November it will undertake a $86M renovation of seven stations on the north end of the Red (Howard Street) line. Each station will be closed for about six weeks.

The timing of this seems a bit odd, since CTA is considering replacement or total rebuilding of the Red Line north of Belmont, including options for a subway or a modern concrete elevated structure which would require replacement of all the existing stations. The station renovation project probably reflects an acknowledgement that the Red Line reconstruction, which is not yet funded, is still many years in the future.
