Google Maps view showing the access shaft at 11th Ave & 26th :http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=40.750554,-74.00547&spn=0.000534,0.000862&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=36.589577,56.513672&t=h&z=20 The two subway tunnels were started here and the TBM machines dug their way north to 41st St, then east to connect with the existing 7 line tunnels under the PABT at 8th Ave & 41st Each tunnel was built using their own TBM machine, and both tunnels were dug simultaneously. Tunnel 1 was completed in June 2010, Tunnel 2 completed in August 2010. The TBM machines were partially dismantled and reversed through the completed tunnels back to the 26th St access shaft where they were dismantled and removed. The TBM machines would have been refurbished by their owner, and are thought to be at work on other tunneling jobs. Since these tunnels are already as far south at 26th St, it shouldn't be too hard to start a "7 Extension Phase II" to dig south to 23rd St and then East to 1st Ave. Anyone got a few $Billion$ to spare? |
