If you don't like outlawing, try a stiff waste tax. second, the really stinky stuff undoubtedly is food related--that's what disposals or composting are for. NYC has finally begun to allow disposals so there is hope. In my case, most of what I put out each week is the paper, plastic, alum or tin can stuff, NONE of which needs to go to landfill. I stopped accepting paper magazines years ago--even the RRHS I belong to has moved to e distribution.Railroading in the next several decades will see massive shifts in what they move. With any luck, the endless strings of steam coal will diminish (will cut my dividends from Chemical Spill eXpress, oh well) and garbage trains should decline too. Why burn fossil fuel to haul petro based trash to be "stored" when it can be reused? |
