Interstingly, until the very early 90's, the Port Jeff line was the "premier" of the three eastern lines. It took a couple years for the traffic to move over to the Ronkonkoma Branch after the 1987 electrification, but it moved fast once it started. I don't think they realized just how much people wanted that service, as within a couple years, it was clear the original island platform at Ronkonkoma was highly inadequate. Until that time people would never have thought about driving from the north or south shores to Ronkonkoma to get the train. |
