I remember seeing the R17 6740's on the Flushing and Astoria lines picking up station refuse. Sometimes they operated solid R17s with the flats, or they would be mixed up with the R21/22's 33S/36's. Like you said, towards the end of their career, they suffered a lot of mechanical issues, and were often sidelined at Corona. Every once and while one out of the five would make an appearance if the others were getting inspected or worked on. Those R17's still had motor generators instead of converters, like what was put on the R21 and R22's.

Btw, R22#7420 also got a D-4 compressor. I think it was also assigned to the signal dolly train for a short while.
