The reason that the cars had to be grouped was due to the MTA's mistaken idea that a map of each line be included on the interior roll sign. The size of the sign made it functionally impossible to include all the BMT/IND routes in the roll sign boxes as designed. In the late 1970s as part of the TA Employee Suggestion Program, I designed a 3 piece roll sign box that displayed the bullet on one side and a separate upper and lower destination sign. The powers that be though it was great if only an interior route map could be included. Since my design couldn't include an interior route map, my suggestion was rejected. Some years after and just long enough after so that I couldn't get any award or acknowledgement for it, the MTA implemented that design on the R-62s and 68s and ultimately on the R-40s and 42s as part of GOH.
