In that vein, I'm trying to think if the Miami Marlins are the only franchise in the 4 major sports to start with a state name and switch to a city name (without moving)...The NFL Cardinals did the opposite, started as the Phoenix Cardinals (after the move from St. Louis), then went to Arizona, while never playing any of their home games within the Phoenix city limits (originally played at Sun Devil Stadium on the ASU campus in Tempe, now play at the Univ. of Phoenix stadium in Glendale, where they are neighbors to the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL. Only team named Phoenix that actually plays in Phoenix are the NBA Suns, who play in the Don't you just love mergers! :) |
