When I rode the entire Metro in Washington, DC 5 years ago, I started and ended my trip at the Vienna/Fairfax station on the Orange Line. When I exited (or rather, attempted to exit), the system lost track of how long I'd been the system (it was 7 hours). Instead of the faregate opening and letting me out, the gate remained closed and the ticket was returned to me. A station agent had to intervene so my ticket could be used to let me out (it looked like the agent typed something into a computer terminal). The entire trip cost the minimum fare at the time, $1.35.
