According to the Refill brochure, you can refill it once it has been activated (used for the first time), so you can refill it in advance. The refill begins to be used after the original expiration.

We discussed the roving expiration dates here before, when I posted that exact situation. My card had expired on Wednesday, I refilled it (but didn't use it) on Thursday, and the reader immediately showed a new expiration date 30 days from that Thursday, even though I hadn't used it. I checked the reader each day, Friday through Monday, and the expiration date kept changing to 30 days beyond the day I was testing it. When I finally used the refill for the first time on Tuesday, the display showed the real expiration date, 3/7, but the MVM shows 3/8.
