As is the case in many other cities, paratransit is killing the MBTA. 'The Ride' (the T's demand-response service) had a farebox recovery ratio of 4 percent in 2010 and required a subsidy of $83 million to carry just over 2 million passengers - that's a subsidy of $39.97 per trip.The MBTA also lags well behind NYCT in cost per trip and farebox recovery metrics for both bus and subway. I suspect the T has not come close to taking advantage of all of the operating efficiencies it could achieve. |
