Twice recently, I decided to transfer from a southbound R to a southbound F at Fourth Avenue and Ninth Street, Brooklyn. Granted that I'm aging, what a climb that is! I don't know whether it's my imagination, but that two-system transfer point (made free in July, 1948) seems to have too many twists and turns where muggers could be hiding. Yes, the news reports seem to say the incident happened on a platform (which direction), but the even raises the decades-long question of sufficient supervision and sufficient policing.

There are at least three levels there: the fare control at street level on the west side of Fourth Avenue, the BMT platform level, the IND platform level. Is there yet another level with an underpass between inbound and outbound R trains?
