Well, my point is that there are laws and procedures. That's why you have the "Rails to Trails" procedure. It allows the railroad to keep title and restore service at some future time while it can be used as a recreational trail in the meantime, or maybe forever. If the line is formally abandoned you have to start looking up the original deeds and easements. Many railroads received easements from adjacent property owners with the provision that if the line was ever abandoned, the property would revert to them. |
