Thirty-five years ago today on Saturday, October 23, 1976, the Electric Railroaders' Association chartered a four-car train of R-10's for a day-long excursion on the BMT Division routes. The cars used on this special train (#3298-3231-3220-2955 [ex-1808]) were repainted again for this event in its then current silver/blue exterior paint scheme.

The trip started at City Hall lower level on the Broadway line in the 10:00am hour, and ended in the afternoon at Essex Street on the Jamaica line. The excursion train covered the following routes (all BMT Division): Broadway Line via 60th Street, Astoria, Manhattan Bridge (south side), 4th Avenue, Sea Beach, Brighton, Montague Street Tunnel, Nassau-Centre Street, Broadway-Brooklyn, Canarsie and Jamaica Avenue.

Now, here are the links to the photos that were taken for that fantrip on this date of Saturday, October 23, 1976 (thirty-years ago), and it was for me personally by my very first E.R.A. sponsored fantrip ever...

R-10 #3298 + R-27/30 "RR" train on other track, Ditmars Boulevard [1], BMT Astoria Line.

R-10 #3298, Ditmars Boulevard [2], BMT Astoria Line.

R-10 #3298, 39th Avenue-Beebe Avenue, BMT Astoria Line.

R-10 #3298, Times Square-42nd Street, BMT Broadway Subway.

R-10 #3298, Kings Highway, BMT Brighton Line [Lunch Stop].

R-10 #2955 [ex-#1808], Beverley Road, BMT Brighton Line.

R-10 #3298, Livonia Avenue, BMT Canarsie Line.

R-10 #3298, 168th Street-Jamaica Avenue, BMT Jamaica Line.

R-10 #3298, 75th Street-Elderts Lane, BMT Jamaica Line.

R-10 #3298, Hewes Street, BMT Jamaica Line.

Now, the reason being that this fantrip train was being operated because it was thought to be a "farewell" for the R-10's, as NYCTA was thinking and making plans to put all the remaining cars in the fleet in storage. Well, it did not happen here, and the R-10's continued on, and even after the end of the fantrip that day, I rode home on an uptown "A" train of R-10's back to my home then in upper Washington Heights.

As a bonus, the R-10 fantrip train went back in regular passenger service on the IND-BMT Division. Two days later, here is the link to whit of a photo showing the same four cars operating in non-rush hour "AA" service...

R-10 #3298, 145th Street, IND 8th Avenue Line, 10/25/1976.

And so it goes...
