I have actually, never seen any actual plans for the path the subway would take if it had been extended past the rumored 76 St station. If it continued along Pitkin Av, it would have to curve south to follow the path of the street. If it were to have gone straight, then it would have had to go through private property including a cemetery which might have been problematic. As was mentioned in other threads on this subject, in the early part of the century, Pitkin Av ended at approximately the Bkln/Qns border and the road that is now referred to as Pitkin Av in Qns was called South Road. Sometime in the 1930s or 1940s, Pitkin was through routed into South Road and the entire length of the thoroughfare was changed to Pitkin Av. I have been unable to locate any maps or other documentation indicating exactly when the street alignment was changed in the area but I would suspect it might have been done around the time the IND was being built there. Since the city through routed 6 Av in Manhattan between W 4 St and Canal St in order to facilitate building the IND subway it is highly possible that something similar took place with Pitkin Av in order to facilitate the proposed extension of the IND subway even though the extension was ultimately never built.
