Without giving away my politics, I believe Pierce's "accomplishment" was that he was the only incumbent Democrat who was not renominated by his own party for a secondd term. And, again without attaching any moral value (here) to the matter, I'd be very surprised indeed if that happened to ObamaI remmeber this bit of trivai from when I was in the 6th grade and Ted Keendy was challenging Jimmy Carter. For the sake of complete neutrality, let me point out that the same thing happened to Republican Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880. James A. Garfield was nominated in his stead... As for Garfield's fate, maybe we can pick that up in OT Chat sometime. |
