But the LI Expressway didn't exist at that time, only Horace Harding Boulevard. Possibly those bellmouths were for a route along this street, however, right to the World's Fair at a minimum, but most likely for a possible extension to Francis Lewis or Springfield Boulevards, or the city Line. Later, the World's Fair route became an extension of the yard leads into Jamaica Yard. It's quite simple - we'll never really know and the reason those bellmouths were built, along with some others, will never actually be known. Conjectures, yes, facts, probably not. I have the very detailed PSC books from most years, but have never seen any reference to any bellmouth anywhere, so although they were built, in many cases, no one knows why. |
