Just a couple of notes:

Often times in planning transit routes there is a tendency to want to have folks who live at the outer ends of a transit line ride the route that becomes an express route rather than a local route. For example, the A-train in Washington Heights, the D-train in the Bronx, or the N-train in Brooklyn.

In addition there is a tendency to also want to create local routes that "end" before the express does. For example the old AA, now C route in Washington Heights, the old CC, now B route in the Bronx, the Eastern Parkway KK route of old, or the M-R-GG along Queens Blvd.

Of course there are times when the track situation as built very much suggests that the express route ends at a particular station, while the local route continues onward. For example Utica Avenue for #4 and #5 trains, 57th Street-7th Avenue now for Q-trains (and other lines at times), and of course the Brighton Beach station.

Having the old M and QB or QJ, now the Q-train as the full-length local trains help simplify the operations at the Brighton Beach station. Fewer trains have to cross each other's path.

Sometimes purely to keep transit riders clear about what trains go where, full-time local routes and part-time express routes work well. For example when the B-train ends there's no Brighton Express service. Passengers don't have to hold doors or question out-loud if the train is express or local.

This is similar to the suggestions that #2 trains be express in the Bronx, while the part-time #5 become the locals. A complete un-necessary recipe for rider confusion.

Just my thoughts.
Mike
