Actually, they were forced to do so by NCAA rules on Native American Team Names.

Most of the ones remaining, notably the Seminoles and the Utes, are approved by the tribes.

North Dakota's Fighting Sioux has a problem in that one tribe supports the name, and another tribe does not, so they're on the NCAA championship ban list.

Really, the worst case of a PC name change was Staten Island's Port Richmond HS, where an attempt was made to force the change from 'Red Raiders' to 'Raiders', even though the red in the name referred to the school colors of red and black, and had never had any Native American association, nor did they use any Indian mascots.
