The midsection of the first locomotive came out OK, but "depth of focus" blurred everything else to varying degrees. Your camera probably thought the light was low and opened the aperture wide, hence the depth of focus and the glare from the window. I couldn't see any real quality difference between the 2 pics.

I think BMTlines may be right - the lens may have a very soft focus. I also can't help but think the camera is somehow losing data in the process - if not in the JPEG conversion, perhaps the camera is interpolating the sensor data? Whatever the case, see if there are things you can play with, like the camera's metering options to correct the overexposure. And of course, avoid digital zoom whenever possible!
