When the BMT operated the Fulton St El, the terminal was called Lefferts AVENUE and the original IND signs were installed with that reading. When the iND opened up there in 1956, the word "AVE" was painted over with the word "BLVD" and it wasn't even in matching font to the word "LEFFERTS." Although I went to college in Queens and knew many people in that neighborhood, nobody could tell me when Lefferts was upgraded from an avenue to a boulevard but it was apparently done before the IND was extended there. The photos of the Euclid model board at Grant Ave station show the notation "To Lefferts Avenue" so the change was probably made sometime after 1948 when that model board was installed. A number of avenues in Queens were upgraded to boulevards probably around the same time. The ones I can think of off the top of my head are Ditmars, Astoria, Junction and of course Lefferts. Why the changes were made, I don't know since when I think of a boulevard I think of a broad thoroughfare with at least one median in the middle like Queens Boulevard. Neither Lefferts nor Ditmars seem to meet that criterion. |
