We spend inordinate sums of money extending commuter rail off into the exurbs while completely neglecting its potential role in inner city transportation. Boston is a perfect example, with their elimination of the Washington St. el and its 'replacement' with the Southwest Corridor, or the extension of the Red Line to Braintree over the Old Colony lines. In both cases superior service could easily have been provided by electrified commuter rail extending to at least the terminals provided by the subway lines. |
