Bigger. Wal-Fart routinely changes the specifications to "shittier" whenever someone else comes close on price with their vendors. If you want to sell your crap at Wal-Fart, then you'd better do as you're told even if you lose money on every sale. :(

I agree. I don't see what the problem is. The city let KMart and Target in, no reason not to allow WalMart too. Competition is good.
But that all said, I have a choice of 5 WalMarts near me, depending on which direction I go in, and it's nothing to write home about. As someone said, it's not as bad as the detractor's claim, but it's also not as good as the supporters claim either. Once it's there, you won't know what all the hoopla was about from either side.

That is true for Home Depot too. I know a wholesaler that deals with Home Depot, and unless the product goes through the register, the supplier doesn't get paid. That's true for lumber, and all sort of things. It's also true in their plant department. For example, at this time of year, if they get a truckload of let's say "Poinsettias", and it's 20 degrees outside and the Home Depot leaves them outside and they freeze, even if it's Home Depot's fault, the supplier doesn't get paid for it. That's exactly how they operate for most of their stuff.

Another example..... I used to know a guy that delivered items to Home Depot, and delivered stuff. I think it was also plants that time, and the guy was told to bring the plants right from the truck to the dumpster, because "that sort of plant didn't sell well in the location", but it was part of the contract that all the stores got them. It's insane.

Actually, I would see it as bad news for only one reason: The roads leading to that area cannot support a Walmart...not with a Target and a BJ's already there.

They should be allowed to open in New York City---somewhere else where traffic concerns wouldn't be a problem, at least for a traditional location. I would suggest near the Staten Island Mall for the first location...and then Walmart should work on formatting its stores for the urban inner-city environment.

Which is why the stock gets crappier and crappier every time. I've never seen a straight board at Homeless Despot ... and unless you're doubling up concave to concave, that don't fly. Even that way, most boards are so far out of true that they rip their own nails out. :)

But hey ... people buy for price alone now ... they *do* get what they paid for. Fortunately around here, there's plenty of REAL merchants now that the big box cons have been around long enough to have stung everybody. Heh.

That's been a big objection to WalMarts everywhere, although it's overshadowed by the other arguments. Building a WalMart changes the traffic pattern for that area for the worse, unless of course, they open up in some existing shopping center.

I haven't heard the same stories about Lowes, but would assume to some extent at least anyway. But in my experience, the product is better at Lowes (at least perceptually). Lowes stores are MUCH better designed and maintained that Home Depot, and better organized. I also find the help to be much more helpful and knowledgeable.
It's good competition, as until Lowes came into the picture, Home Depot was WAY worse. They had to improve to compete. HD is still not great, but it's better than before Lowes came in.
We also found a reverse of the trend too. While HD put a LOT of old hardware stores, etc out of business when they first came in, in more recent years, a few smaller hgardware and paint stores reopened, remodeled, and other things, and they really have found a little bit of a niche. I have seen this happen more and more recently.

Yes, that is what had been happening near me. While we have at least 5 WalMarts, depending on which direction I go in, they wanted to put one more nearby, and there has been severe objection, but they really have picked a bad site....it's in the middle of what is currently an entirely residential area, even though it is on route 27, and there is a hospital nearby, and a very narrow bridge over Route 27. The objection is the usual (blah blah big box store etc etc), but the real objection is the traffic problem. The cross road is a small two lane road with a very narrow two lane bridge, and it really is 95% residential, so it's an odd spot. There are so many abandoned or underutilized shopping centers near by, on better roads, and locations, so don't understand why the one in question is needed.

Lowes is DEFINITELY better ... but not by all that much. And of course, Lowes also has "broom technology" to hold down the dust levels and schmutz. Lowes is OK in my book when I need a replacement toilet part or cheap plastic drain elbows and the like. But for wood and electrical stuff, I'd rather go to a local lumber yard or plumbing/electrical supply and pay a little extra for something that actually lasts.

The big boxes have pretty much run their course up here - only people who use them these days are newbies who've moved here from Long Island and downstate suburbs who have yet to learn the lesson of what not to do with "This old house needs work." Heh.

While they should open in Staten Island, opening in Staten Island is pretty minor. If they want to open the floodgates, they need to open in one of the seven digit population boroughs. That having been said, there is NO location without heavy traffic in the real boroughs.

Absolutely. Although, as mentioned, Lowes IS better than HD. While it's best to go to a lumber yard to buy a few 2X4's, you onlky have to go through about 10 or 15 to get 2 or 3 good non-warped ones at Lowes. To get 2 or 3 good non warped ones at Home Depot, you have to go through the entire pile.
Back to the "inferior product"....HD gets the seconds, and even thirds, while the real lumber yards get the firsts. Do you think that a builder would go through going through 20 2X4's to get 1 or 2 good ones when doing a project....and this is NOT an exagerration, anyone that has bought lumber at HD (or even Lowes to a much lesser extent) will know what I mean.

The big boxes have pretty much run their course up here - only people who use them these days are newbies who've moved here from Long Island and downstate suburbs who have yet to learn the lesson of what not to do with "This old house needs work."

It's changing here too. As I mentioned, there's a lot of smaller stores opening up in recent years in competition to HD, etc....they have found a niche.

And Gateway is an existing shopping center. I think most of its customer base is already driving out to Nassau Wal-Marts. It would be an overall reduction in vehicle miles traveled, and probably a reduction in vehicle trips entirely because they're already shopping at the Home Depot, BJs, etc. that are already at Gateway.

I prefer to buy properly treated wood (carpenter ants abound up here) and I've found that Lowes' lumber, while fairly straight, isn't treated very well. But at least if you get there on Tuesday after the truck arrives, you can find some fairly straight ones. I still prefer the local lumber yards though ... they usually cut their own boards and properly treat them.

There's also a strong "buy local" culture here and the locals go out of their way to buy whatever they can stock from around the area. That's a plus too. If you've got a problem with something, they'll gladly take care of it. Like I said, the only folks who seem to shop at the big boxes are the newbies. They eventually get with the program after they've been burned enough. :)

It's the same out here. Our Walmarts are pretty unkempt. Clothes are tossed all over the place and on the floor and the stores are pretty dirty compared to Target. It's probably some combination of: lower end goods (leading to lower end clientele), less hard working employees (lower paid?), and busier stores. Our Targets are pretty busy, but Walmarts are even busier.

It's really turned me off of Walmart. I'll go to one out of town, but not in the LA area. It's unpleasant. Plus I have two Targets within 2 miles and the closest Walmart is 8 or 10 miles away.

Well, to make a long story short, I have to redo the whole thing again, now 10 years later. Of course, to make the long story short, I won't be getting the wood at HD or Lowes this time around....

We have some Target Supercenters. They have a supermarket like most Walmart locations do.

Our regular Targets added lots more groceries a year or so ago. They sell stuff like cereal, bread, milk, juice, TV dinners, frozen foods, soups, etc. Similar to a grocery store but I don't think that they have fresh fruits and vegetables or meats.

Make sure that it's treated ... good wood costs money, too much southern pine crap out there. Best outdoor timber comes from Canada, especially Quebec.

I've only seen a Walmart in Belen, NM that sold gas. It was a massive supercenter. I haven't seen any chain sell gas other than Stop and Shop.

Fred

Groceries is the money maker now. Walmart says it now represents more than 50% of sales.

In suburban Tampa, we have about five or six new Walmart Supercenters that sell gas. I guess the newer locations all do it. The smaller locations near downtown never do.

Stop and Shop discounts the gas price a nickel a gallon if you swipe your courtesy card and even more if you buy groceries there. I've seen a discount of a quarter a gallon at best from that. I wonder if WalMart does something similar.

Fred

That's pure liberal claptrap. I've yet to hear one liberal explain logically why Walmart has been singled out for such scorn. Perhaps you'd like to give it a try?

Up here, Wife Chopper has a gimmick card where the more you spend, the bigger the discount (in 10 cent/gal increments) you get off Sunoco gas at area gasaterias. Since we have a hybrid, it's not unusual for us to get up to 80 cents a gallon off when we do our monthly fillup. We often bring jerry cans for the tractor in the trunk too.
