i love how racism gets overlooked if the racist supports statist economics. why is it that when someone opposes a strong federal government racism makes anything else do invalid while when someone supports a strong federal government they can get away with whatever they want on the issue of race. the left thinks Reagan's "welfare Queens" comment is worse than than FDR sending people to prison camps because of their race.

You gotta concede that being in a shooting war with Japan is a lot more cause to imprison them than just "because of their race". I'm not saying it was right but the impetus is more complex than you describe.

Yes. Not sure about Germans but Italians -- on the west coast -- were moved away from the coast. Among others, Joe Dimaggio's father, who was a fisherman, was interned.

That's because leftists feel that the Reagan comment was aimed at African-Americans, a group that has suffered more than any other group in American history. At the same time leftists have decided that Japanese-Americans have recovered from that episode in US history and no longer need their sympathy. THIW.

IIRC, we weren't involved in a shooting war with the poor when Reagan made that hateful, injurious and completely inaccurate statement. Despite its inherent wrongness, we were at war at the time against Japan and the morals of the day permitted it.

The nation has since made its apology and provided some reparations to those who were wrongfully interred.

The poor have only seen their situation get worse since Reagan's time, with no apologies.

We worked on making one wrong right, as best we can. How about doing something about the other?

I don't think they got more worked up but I agree they got worked up over Reagan's comments. What Reagan said was stupid and deserves chastisement but not as much chastisement as putting people in camps, no.

The bottom line is that bad stuff isn't always pushing the meter all the way to Hitler and just because it's not Hitler* doesn't mean it's not bad. And just because people get worked up over one bad event doesn't mean they're turning their backs on another, equally or worse bad event.

I won't argue that but my point was that the war led to the internment. If it weren't for the attack on Pearl Harbor and the war it began, the Japanese would have continued living in their own homes.

Hardly to the same extent. They were not rounded up and put in detention camps. Considering that roughly the same number of Americans dies at the ETC as did on Pearl Harbor, I think we showed enormous restraint.

It wasn't realistic, I agree. But the internment of the Japanese (most of whom were citizens, for God's sake) was so out of proportion to any threat . . .

They could've just interned the non-citizens, for instance.
