No Poll: When to Snowblow? |
|
Posted by TerrapiN StatioN on Mon Jan 26 20:10:19 2015 How often and at what times during the blizzard should I clear my driveway with my snowblower? Should I wait until tomorrow morning at 8am when there might be 20 inches? Should I do it once at 2am and then again at 8am? Will it all freeze over and harden if I wait until 8am? |

How often and at what times during the blizzard should I clear my driveway with my snowblower? Should I wait until tomorrow morning at 8am when there might be 20 inches?Only half the snow is supposed to fall overnight, so I'd say you can wait till then. Should I do it once at 2am and then again at 8am? Will it all freeze over and harden if I wait until 8am? No it won't. If it was wet snow and then got colder, it would. But in a storm like this where it's consistently below freezing, it won't freeze hard. |

Some simple tips will help keep it sane for you, the snow you're getting down there is commonplace up here. This will help keep it sane for you.Rule number one: Try to blow when the snow you want to clear hits at 6 inches of new snow in the path you intend to clean. The 6 inch rule ensures that your machine won't work as hard and most importantly is far less likely to clog. Trying to clear a clog is where most people get injured, don't overload the machine and let it clog on you. Rule number two: Throw it as far from your intended path as you can on the first run. Make sure your ejector is blowing snow WITH the wind, the objective here is to not get some of it and go back for a second pass. This is how clogs get caused. Rule number three: Take short bites and wait for the chute to clear before shoving it in for another pass. Rule number four: If you run out of gas before the job is done, don't go and fill it up again and get back on it. Let the engine cool down first before refueling, the tank is usually right on top of the engine on most and that could potentially cause an unpleasant surprise. Rule number five: Don't try to bite the full width of the machine. You may need to in order to get started, but once you've gotten one pass through, try to bite half of the width of the machine for subsequent passes. In order to prevent clogs, the blades need some room to get the snow out the chute. Hope this helps. |

That 2 feet they're predicting will accumulate by tomorrow evening and like AlM says, we'll only have half that in the morning. Right now I'm looking at 23º with dry snow here, accumulation 4 inches.your pal, Fred |

First thing you learn is lawnmowers, then those and then chainsaws before you get your gun. But there's nothing more amusing than watching kids from the city come up here, rot until the next morning to get on the snowfall, jam their toy up and have no idea of how to unjam it or replace the belt that snapped. :) |

Single or two stage? How large? 22"? 30"? A tractor mounted unit? If it's a single stage 15" unit then yeah, get out there and blow the shit out of it early and often because the POS will bog down when the snow is over the top of the deck. If you have a two stage 30" blower then I'd wait and stay warm. No matter how careful I am I catch some windblown snow and end up freezing. I'd rather do it once and be done. |

This winter I've used it twice so far - last Saturday night and this morning. I keep it garaged at all times so it's still looking pretty nice. |
