Younger folks like myself prefer Caribbean, and the name is applied to some other Caribbean festivals around the world like Toronto's Caribana/Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Toronto which rivals New York's as the largest in North America. |

I don't normally think of Mexicans as Caribbean, although they may be in that part.Are all of the Caribbean people "West Indian" regardless of race or language? For some reason I usually associate it with English speaking black people from places like Jamaica, Barbados, etc. |

Wouldn't Caribbean include parts of Mexico, Central, and South America?While there are plenty of countries that touch the sea, for all intents and purposes, Caribbean ends up being a proxy for former Dutch, English, and French colonies along with the United States Virgin Islands, while former Spanish possessions are considered Hispanic/Latino. So somewhere like Belize and Guyana are culturally considered Caribbean (and they're both members of CARICOM), but the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico aren't despite being in the heart of the region. As for the term West Indian, it tends to be more of an Anglophone reference, but you'll sometimes see older Haitians like my mother use it in English. It's still used as a descriptor in certain contexts, but it's has been subsumed by the term Caribbean in describing the region, and for some of us who who cringe at the word "African American", an important regional ethnic identifier. |

My people are from Barbados..very prideful of our nationality..but being considered "African American" never struck me as something derogatory because there was nothing wrong with that statement as far as my father was concerned.Africa is the very birthplace..the womb..the ORIGIN of Man..so to me it is what it is..families were taken from there willingly and unwillingly,to places all over the world..especially to the Americas.. Outside of that..INDIVIDUAL and NATIONAL IDENTITY is about pride in ones place of origin and different subsets. The OVERALL sense of it all comes straight to this..being AMERICAN, regardless of your origins, is one of NATIONAL PRIDE..and the subsets come next. |

Or is it something else?It's something that's a bit more common with the the immigrants from the late 1960s to mid-1980s as they tended to view themselves as better than their native born African American counterparts. When you're an immigrants with two jobs working to send money back home to a country that's poor with family members living in shacks, some of the excuses that the native born give for not being able to finish school or find work come across as hollow. |
