The issue is not the card, which is readily replicable, it's the number that you want to safeguard. About 3 years ago, NYCT went through a program to expunge all employee SSI# where it was not necessary and then instituted a policy to keep all other documents (that required SSI #s) in secure facilities with very limited access. Memorize your number and leave your card at home. |

I had a neighbor whose social security and Medicare cards were stolen at age 90. He had never had a driver's license and he was never able to get the cards replaced, because he no longer had any ID. However, the social security office was willing to give him a printout of his social security wage history, which was enough to convince people that he was eligible for Medicare. |
