I stated that many vets returning from those wars are disabled due to brain injury. That would show a swell in disability claims. The military only provides lifetime medical. The rest is up to the individual, and if you have a doctor certifying a disabling injury, you collect disability. |

In the last few years the workplace has gotten so unsafe that the number on disability has risen from just over 2 million to more than 8 million.I wouldn't argue that per se, but I'd make an argument that some people are on disability while receiving treatments for various health issues (e.g cancer, stroke), while others are young and trying to game the system to avoid working, and others are what one could call "nearly" disabled. In other words, they may have had years of seniority built up, but once a firm lets them go, it's difficult to find work not due to economy per se, but simply because nobody wants to employ them. For example, my aunt uses a cane to walk around, and she was a cook in a restaurant. She was let go by the hotel where she works, and while many of her co-workers were able to find work in other hotels and catering halls, she's unable to find work since nobody would willingly employ a cook that needs a cane and has trouble walking, especially if there are plenty of other younger and healthier candidates. Given that she's too young for Social Security, her best option is disability. |

I do think that this does need to be investigated unless you want to pay 15-18% of your salary to social security and unless you don't want to get your partial benefit until you reach age 72. I think we need to know why only 80,000 jobs were created last month while 82,000 new disability claims were approved. |

What happened is that after the Bush Economic Meltdown a lot of people who were already disabled but working found themselves out of a job and it was a good time to put in for what they would have already been eligible anyway.The determination for eligibility for benefits often takes years. Add in Iraq and we are where we are today. |
