It's Started Already - ABC News Apologizes for trying to link COLO suspect to Tea Party

Jenna Johnson
ABC News incorrectly links alleged gunman to Colorado tea party

This editor’s note appeared this morning on an ABC News reportabout the massacre at a Colorado movie theater: “An earlier ABC News broadcast report suggested that a Jim Holmes of a Colorado Tea Party organization might be the suspect, but that report was incorrect. ABC News and Brian Ross apologize for the mistake, and for disseminating that information before it was properly vetted.”

Erik Wemple, who writes about the media for the Post, blogged about what he calls an “[u]nforgivable, regrettable, amateurish, miserable” mistake: ABC News invites bias claims with bogus Aurora report

It's telling that Ross used an unconfirmed Google connection and ran with it on the air. It's not so much journalistic malpractice as pure bias. The real story is how Ross so readily believed a Tea Partier could have done this.

BTW, word is the dude was a PHd student at Colorado U and had liberal political persuasions. Of course this means OWS did it.

With two people of the same name I could see the error being made. This kind of thing is why there are retractions, which separate legitimate news from suspect bloggers, rumormills and aggregators.

Perhaps if the teabaggers didn't go parading around while armed people would not have the perception that they are a hairtrigger away from terrorists. That image is of their own creation....

Yeah, that carrying a gun is harmless, pulling the trigger is. You're basically condemning everyone driving a car as a menace because one or two of them runs a pedestrian over.

I was watching Matt Lauer and NBC had a big graphic with the name and age of suspect, including "White Male". Why include that if a suspect is in custody?

Lots are blaming Rush Limbaugh. Many want this to be about politics to help Obama in the upcoming election.

It might get political, but for reasons not beneficial to Obama:

Mai says the mother told him Holmes couldn't find a job after earning a master's degree from a public university in California

There are also some tenuous ties between Holmes and OWS.

No I'm not. Just because one drives does not mean they intend to harm anyone. That's not the same with a gun. To even go and buy a gun, one has to be motivated to do harm. Otherwise they wouldn't go through with the hassle (be it background checks or illegal pursuit of a criminal gun dealer) and expense of getting one.

A gun, especially a handgun, has ONE and only ONE purpose, and that is to harm.

Depends on the time of day. Same as everywhere else.

You explain tome how someone consciously decides to buy a handgun (which this suspect has in their possession when arrested) with no intention to do harm to any living thing.

It disgusts me how any tragic or unsavory event automatically is linked to politics. Once this horrendous incident happened, people were rallying about gun control laws, but linking this cold-hearted killer to a political group really takes the cake.

Why can't people just report the news anymore instead of trying to add their little spin or "gotcha" moment to it?

No, he targeted the audience of a major motion picture.

The logical explanation is that he's nuts and had his own motivations which probably make no sense. However, I am getting sick and tired of those on the left accusing the Tea Party of engaging in or encouraging every act of violence which hits the media. I haven't forgotten how the left reacted after the Giffords shooting, and I haven't forgiven anyone for what they did for nearly 5 days before we found out just how nuts Loughner was.

A hometown neighbor's word is pretty flimsy too, about someone that age no longer living with their family. And it's another ABC affiliate Chris, the very same network you chastised earlier for a retracted report about his being a teabagger, as one with the same name was known to live in the Aurora CO area.....seems that information that suits your personal spin is OK, but that which does not must see your online condemnation, eh?

There are plenty of college age people that have attended a OWS event. It doesn't mean a blasted thing. Unarmed, peaceful protests/events are just as much a social thing, beyond the point of said event. I could see a lot of guys just going because they might get laid. Same as the 60s & 70s. Lots of guys grew their hair for precisely the same reason.

Competition. 3 networks, 3 cable news outlets and millions of people with access to the internet. The facts simply won't distinguish you from the crowd.

I have no problem with speculating by the media. I take issue with biased speculation. Like I said before, this is the only thing Brian Ross did before he went on the air with his "exclusive":

Brian Ross not only immediately thought of the Tea Party when this story broke, he did not even bother to verify his scoop before going on the air. Why? Bad journalism? Probably not. He's not a moron. He ran with it because his biased mind was convinced it had to be true and there was no need for further verification.

They are still a big threat, but white male loners or militia types have always been a big threat. Look at Unabomber.

No, both sides do NOT. The left does. Not the right. There was not a single conservative who immediately accused Barack Obama for being responsible for the Giffords shooting.

The Unabomber was a left wing radical, not a "militia" type. The only real act of violence attributable to "militia types" in the last generation or so was OKC.

My memeory is just fine, fuck you and I do not recall anyone accusing the Times Square bomber of being connected to the teabaggers. There was a white balding guy hanging around the truck at issue just before it went off. It's on the surveillance tapes. He had nothing to do with it, but he was there.

The picture on the left is a woodpile, to the right a Communist. Learn the difference.

That's a justifiable conclusion, though if you were a reporter you'd best wait until something verified such. The difference here is that a journalist jumped to a conclusion not due to personal experiences with covering violent acts, but because of personal prejudices which defy reality. If there had been dozens of Tea Party related shootings in the previous 3 years, Ross's actions might have been more forgivable.

but white male loners or militia types have always been a big threat

Which became a popular media meme, and explains why the authorities overlooked a black guy with a kid in his trunk in the D.C. area snipings. And overlooked that a black man was the Atlanta child murderer.

Certain stereotypes are allowed to be perpetuated.

Being that he is President, and his location can therefore be readily verified at any given time, they'd have no chance of implying such.
