He was there from the beginning. the first clip is from Hugh Hefner After Dark and was the first version of the band. The second clip is Highway Star from Machine Head. Nuff said.

Thanks for the great music, Mr. Lord.

your pal,
Fred

People criticize this song for it's simple riff, but I think that's what makes it so awesome. I could play this when I was 12, I felt like a rock star (before Rock Star).

That is indeed bad news; he will surely be missed.

The song that comes to my mind whenever his name is mentioned is "Hush", from 1968. A thunderous rush of Hammond organ throughout the entire song. Queens Plaza IND station also comes to mind when I hear that song - from a couple of subway rides I took with my Dad that summer (including my first ride on a Slant).

That album was tremendous; I picked Highway Star for it's organ solo but all those songs were great.

Fred

Lord also wrote SOTW to match accompany a riff that Ritchie Blackmore had come up with a couple of years earlier.

That's the first song everybody plays.

I agree that its simplicity is what makes it awesome.

It's primal, which is what rock is all about.

Definitely a classic. However, my favorite DP song is this one:

We had the edited single of that in the jukebox at my high school.

Man, that's two from cancer out of that era (Ronnie Dio; and Tony Iommi has cancer).

Personal favorite by that band. More "metal" than a lot of Black Sabbath songs IMHO.
