There were a number of commanders before him anyhow, and he was the third captain if any of the books or early scripts are canon (first captain of the Constitution-class vessel with that name being Robert April). |

But in Star Trek, nothing except that which appears on screen is canon, and sometimes, not even then. That would make Christopher Pike the first known captain of the Enterprise (NCC-1701, that is). |
