Anyone should be able to attend the best school they qualify for and can afford. It is not the place for private schools to demand or receive public tax monies to support their enterprises.And if you can't "afford," you are at the mercy of the public school officials who provide your children with whatever education they (and the teachers' labor union) feel like giving them. What about the parents that want their neighborhood school to provide that world-class education? Shouldn't they have the right to that, regardless of what neighborhood they live in? (This BTW, is what most parents want) Yes, they should have that right. But the public schools almost never give them a fraction of that and, without competition, they have no incentive to wither. |

Public schools are NOT adequately FUNDED. That is the problem with public education.Children need a safe secure building to focus on learning in, not one where lessons get disrupted by breaking pipes or vermin dancing across the floor. They need up to date materials.In some cases they need materials in a language they can understand as they learn English. They need well paid professionals teaching them. Most importantly, they need family and neighborhood support., examples to see the merit of a good education. People need to grasp that without proper funding, building crumble, materials wither into obsolescence, staffing becomes less than adequate for the task. Funding that once came exclusively from property taxes is inadequate for the job,and state and now thanks to republicans that want to "eliminate " education funding at the Federal level are insuring that the public school system will fail. It takes revenue to succeed. Tell Grover Norquist, who is NOT an elected official but is holding the future of America hostage with his stupid pledge, that. |

IT's first and foremost about parental, family and community participation and support. I said that.The best way to enable that is economics. Employers that pay living wages enable parents to just need one job each in the majority of cases. Those jobs need to offer some flexibility so parents can get to school to participate in functions, PTA, etc as well as follow what their child(ren) are doing in class. Parents that need to work 2 or 3 jobs to make ends (not) meet leave their children not only academically abandoned but at risk to be drawn to undesirable influences. |

It is not a permanent situation however. KIds, especially young ones need to have the same level of education in their native language so they keep up with the general cirrocuium until such time as they are proficient in English enough to learn along with English speaking peers. |

The highest rates of failure are seen in places with the least parental involvement. The majority of those parents aren't bad, but they are overwhelmed. They also do not have the flexibility to participate as they would like to. |

Kids can come through the program and join English speaking classes when they are capable. However, tossing kids into a class where they don't understand what's going on, cannot grasp the work end up put off to school and are more likely to cause trouble for the class and themselves. For most it's a brief time in bilingual ed until they're in with the general student population. In that time, they keep up with skill such as math to their regular grade level so they function well once in an English speaking class. |
