The board hand-picked by Mayor Michael Bloomberg that must approve his ban of selling large sugar-filled drinks at restaurants might be looking at other targets.

The New York City Board of Health showed support for limiting sizes of sugary drinks at a Tuesday meeting in Queens. They agreed to start the process to formalize the large-drink ban by agreeing to start a six-week public comment period.

At the meeting, some of the members of board said they should be considering other limits on high-calorie foods.

One member, Bruce Vladeck, thinks limiting the sizes for movie theater popcorn should be considered.

"The popcorn isn't a whole lot better than the soda," Vladeck said.

Another board member thinks milk drinks should fall under the size limits.

"There are certainly milkshakes and milk-coffee beverages that have monstrous amounts of calories," said board member Dr. Joel Forman.

Mayor Bloomberg says the drink rules are an attempt to fight obesity in the city. It would limit food service establishments in the city from serving drinks bigger than 16 ounces but would allow refills.

The New York City Restaurant Association is fighting the proposal and is considering legal action of it goes into effect.

New York City voters oppose 51 - 46 percent Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposed ban on the sale of over-sized sugary soft drinks, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.

We are getting closer to becoming the infantilized society depicted in that movie, every day.

well half want the ban.

I say they need to ban all foods, and create a local gov't agency to makes it's own rations to give to all citizens. Of course you can get double rations if you know the right ppl and vote right...

For once we agree completely on something. It's ridiculous. They have no god damned right to try and tell me what I can and can't drink or eat. What scares me even more is the sick 46% in the poll that actually agree with this absurdity.

you can have your soda. you can have your milkshakes. they are simply telling vendors that these drinks can't be served in large sizes.

NYC is a healthier place because of laws passed in the last 10 years.

btw- all the McDonald's I stopped by on I-95 in the Mid-Atlantic states now advertise no trans fat french fries, so the NY mentality is spreading. Fredericksburg. Florence. All these towns now have healthier fries.

You should not be buying a 32 ounce or Big Gulp or whatever. I hope NYC rejects 7-11 expansion.

I don't buy 32 oz sodas, I don't even buy 16 oz sodas, as I rarely drink soda. But that's not the point. The few times I may want to, or anyone else that would want to should have a right to.

It does, and that's the downside. When they find a substance to be harmful, like transfat, then banning it is a good idea but it goes wrong when it extends to portion control like it did here.

It's *how* you teach ... back in high school in the Bronx, we didn't dare cut up in front of our chem teacher for instance ... all he had to say when anyone started to act out was "remember what happens when hydrocarbons and oxidizer combine under an ignition source? Wanna see that again?" It worked. :)

But that class warfare's gotta stop. We've moved from zip guns in the hallway to grenade launchers in some schools. Heh.

The smoking bans in workplace....and oublic buildings is good....but it eventually goes overboard...as has already begun....such no smoking in outdoor parks. Eventually they will try and do private homes...private cars....and just on the sidewalk...it never ends and they keep taking.
