Comcast, new owner of NBC did not renew her contract. Rumor has it that Sweet Sue did too much drinkie-pooI. The night of the "F-Bomb", she had knocked back a few more than she normally did at Gallaghers, where she hung out between the 6PM and the 11PM news! You should have stuck to the steaks -and sodas, Sue!

I think boozing it up follows in the footsteps of other great American journalists. Cronkite and Murrow tipped a few back.

I believe the real reason she was let go was that she was just not worth the salary she was being paid. Chuck Scarborough actually took a pay cut to remain on the air a few years back. Simmons refused. I also met Simmons a few times. In the late 80's, she lived in the Union Square area and patronized the restaurant I worked at. Lets just say that the rumors of her sexual orientation are given credence to what I witnessed while she was in there.

While Simmons may have been a 3 decade old institution, for me, local news in New York is defined by two other anchors: Roger Grimsby and Bill Beutel.

I was a strange kid, I always watched the news.

Journalists are story tellers by trade, and they love to trade stories. What better envirnoment than a gin mill? Hey barkeep! I'll have three feet of news, please! :)

Who could EACH pound down more booze than the entire 4 news crew. I worked with those guys for a while. Grimsby often had to be propped up on set with 2x4's. Beutel was held up by luftballoons. :)

How Grimsby got through ANY cast without dropping the f-bomb still amazes me. Heh.

Although this one is more about naivity rather than bloopers or drunkedness (so it is slightly off topic) it is my favorite "newcaster" YouTube:

Let us not forget detective-turned-journo Mike Sheehan, who got so blotto after covering the baby in the trash compactor story, he drove right into a police horse. Judge went easy on him...she'd watched thd news that night, and saw his report.

Wow, I didn't know the late evening news anchors were allowed to drink before going on the air. I always thought those anchors be doing office work between 6 and 11 PM newscasts lol.

I wonder if the dude from Ch 5 news at 10PM be drinking, I remember dude said "Keep fucking that Chicken" as a joke, the other night dude was making goat sounds LOL.

Its always interesting to hear about what goes on behind scenes on the local news. Ch 7 their studio has a window with their news set, I remember I was walking though the Upper West Side last summer and I saw Liz Cho and Bill Liter? doing the 6PM newscast, pretty cool.
