The owners of the kosher restaurant in Rome's Jewish Ghetto – a historic quarter in the centre of the city – were surprised when Mr Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan walked away without leaving a gratuity. Their bill came to just 32 euros after a lunch consisting of deep-fried artichokes – a Roman Jewish speciality – fried pumpkin flowers and ravioli stuffed with sea bass and artichokes. Instead of wine or beer they opted for a bottle of water and a pot of tea. Waiters at Nonna Betta, which specialises in Roman Jewish cuisine, were amazed by Mr Zuckerberg's parsimony, not just because of his huge wealth but because of Americans' reputation for tipping generously, as is expected of them at home. It was not a case of not enjoying the meal, said the owner of the restaurant. "I asked him 'how was it?' and he said 'very good'", the owner, identified only as Umberto, told Corriere della Sera newspaper. "I had gone up to him and said 'Are you ...?' and he said 'Yes'." It was not the first time that the multi-billionaire chose not to tip – he reportedly did the same thing the night before at Pierluigi, a historic trattoria near Campo de' Fiori, a pizza in the heart of Rome. The couple's honeymoon was a closely guarded secret until a Polish tourist spotted them in the Sistine Chapel, snapped a blurry photograph, and posted it on Twitter – Facebook's social network rival. True to his casual style, the young internet tycoon was wearing jeans, a T-shirt and trainers. They left Rome on Monday, with speculation that they might be heading towards the Amalfi Coast south of Naples before heading back to the US. Mr Zuckerberg, 28, whose shares in Facebook are worth nearly $20 billion, married his long-time girlfriend on May 19 in Palo Alto, California. Their wedding took place a day after Facebook's initial public offering on the NASDAQ stock exchange. The couple had planned the exchange of vows for four months, but surprised their guests, who thought they were to celebrate Miss Chan's recent graduation from medical school, a celebrity magazine reported. Mr Zuckerberg, Time magazine's Person of the Year in 2010, started Facebook in his Harvard University dorm room eight years ago, before dropping out of the Ivy League school. Ms Chan just graduated from medical school at the University of California, San Francisco. The couple met while at Harvard. |

My experience is that typically you "round up" for good service, rather than an American style percentage tip. So for a lunch of 32-and-change-Euros with good service you would give them 35 and everyone is happy. It is a bit more delicate where credit cards are involved, as almost all credit cards here are done by PIN and not by signature on a piece of paper (where you would write in the tip), so you don't always have the ability to leave a tip. In those cases you would give something close to the equivalent of "rounding up" in cash. This is the case in Switzerland as well as in the German-speaking part of Italy. I'm sure SMAZ will fill us in if customs are different in Rome. Then we'll know if Mr. Zuckerberg did not follow the timeless advice of "When in Rome..." |

Italy is one of the rudest nations on Earth. They don't politely form queues when waiting for something, they don't tip, they pretty much don't give ground to anyone else. After the cruise ship debacle earlier this year I recall an in depth article on why the American and Italian passengers behaved so differently, but I lost the link. It documents the disparity of social customs well. |

The "South Tyrol." The Italians were on the winning side and the Austrians on the losing side. Bits of what was formerly Austria-Hungary became Italy. There are also still Slovenian speaking folks near Trieste for the same reason. |

World War I.Italy took the region known as "South Tirol" from Austria and kept it. Today it is about 65% German speaking and 35% Italian. All signs are in both languages, and the cities (and their train stations) have German and Italian names ("Meran/Merano"). |

For a 32.50 euro meal using the X.18 I'm familiar with the tip comes to 5.85 euros and I'd round up to 6 euros.Rounding up the 32.50 to 35 euros makes 2.5 euros. However, tax and wage laws in the US take tipping into account for wait staff, etc. I wonder what those laws are in Poland? |

You've pretty much got it. The x.15 or x.18 or x.20 are the custom in the US because restaurant staff are paid lesser wages to reflect anticipated tips. The laws here don't allow for discounting wages to reflect anticipated tips like they do in the US. So the "round up" is really just a way of saying "thank you and please keep the change". There don't seem to be any hard and fast rules. If a meal costs 32, then 35 makes sense (40 would be considered overdoing it). If it is 34, though, you wouldn't round up to 35 -- you'd go to 40. As the bill goes up, the "round up" goes up as well. A meal costing 92 would go to 100, not 95. A meal costing 365 would go to 400. So it is kinda sorta like 10% but probably a little less in the end. |
