Without physical evidence (i.e. the body) all they have is the "suspect's" statements (which he can recant). It was mentioned on the news this morning that he hadn't told them anything that wasn't already made public 33 years ago and again recently. If he tells them something about the case that wasn't made public then there is a chance.

Agreed. This guy could have read the papers to get details and then make an "admission" just to get his own name in the papers. I don't think the Etan Patz case will ever be solved.

Re: Arrest In Patz Case; Suspect Signs Confession

The NYPD has obtained a signed and videotaped confession from the suspect, Pedro Hernandez, who has now been arrested and charged with the kidnapping and murder of Etan Patz. Although he is at present believed to have acted alone, police are looking into the possibility Hernandez, now 68, might have had accomplices. Among the details Hernandez is said to have given police, was that Patz' body was taken from where he was killed, and thrown away with the trash.

Until yesterday, police were looking hard at a different suspect, Jose Ramos, a pedophile who lived near Patz' house, and who was declared responsible for the boy's death in a civil case eight years ago. However, Hernandez' chilling confession led detectives to arrest him as Patz' killer today. If convicted, Hernandez would likely die in prison for his crimes.

That's why I have my doubts. After 33 years are there any facts about the disappearance that aren't public or that haven't been leaked out by the NYPD? I hope this is the guy to give the Patz family some closure but something is still missing here.

As the Times points out, 200 separate people confessed to kidnaping the Lindbergh baby. A confession alone proves nothing.

According to Commissioner Kelly, this guy knew chapter and verse about the Patz killing. Even in 1979, the NYPD held stuff back from the media about open cases. We'll see if his confession holds up in court.
