DC Comics Character to Come Out As Gay

May 21, 2012 10:41 AM ET
by Joyce Eng
DC Comics plans to reintroduce a character as gay, comic blog BleedingCool.com reports.

DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio announced the plans over the weekend at Kapow Comic Convention in London, saying that the existing superhero who was previously assumed to be straight will be "one of our most prominent gay characters." He did not specify in which issue the reveal will occur.

President Barack Obama: Same-sex couples should be able to get married

The news comes a year after DiDio told The Advocate that he only intends to introduce new characters in the DC universe as gay rather than make existing ones gay. Of the change in plans, DC Comics Senior VP Bob Wayne told BleedingCool.com that DiDio's view "has evolved," echoing President Barack Obama's recent endorsement of same-sex marriage.

The gay DC superhero won't be the first gay comic book character. In 2010, Archie Comics introduced gay student Kevin Keller, who later got married. Marvel Comics will reportedly feature the first gay superhero wedding between Northstar and his boyfriend in next month's issue of Astonishing X-Men.

What do you think of DC Comics' plan? Which character do you think will be gay?

So not only do we have to force diversity for no apparent reason, but we have to force sexuality like PP and the WH does for elementary students. As if that weren't enough.

I'll point out that while Superman was originally the 'defender of Jews and Christians everywhere' and that had to be scrubbed, just like Captain America and Indiana Jones, but since we are making one exception now, I have a character to suggest. How about the Ladyboy?

Superman's reticence to pair up with Lois has been examined several times in canon (the actual comic books) and in the movies (non-canon, e.g., the storyline in the movies doesn't necessarily mesh with what is going on in the comic books, For example, in the X-Men movie trilogy, the characters are all out of sequence from their stories and eras in the X-Men comic. Kitty Pryde shouldn't even be in the sane class as the X-Men in the movies, because she's a generation younger in the comics, here she was, in fact, a New Mutant.).

In canon, Clark never really gets into a long-term relationship with Lois, because all Superman's enemies might discover the truth and attack her, or (in another sequence) the sexual physiognomy of the relationship between a Kryptonian and a human just wouldn't work. (For an excellent exposition of this, read Man Of Steel, Woman of Kleenex, by Larry Niven, well explored in my link.)

In Superman II, Clark voluntarily gives up his superpowers to be with Lois, but quickly discovers the world needs Superman. He ends the relationship after reclaiming his powers to beat General Zod and his accomplices, who are, aided by Lex Luthor (of course), terrorizing the world. He then erases Lois' memory of ever being in a relationship with Clark, or her knowledge that he is, in fact, Superman.

Naww...my money is on Alfred, Bruce Wayne's butler...LOL!

Some Superman movie should have had Brainiac as the villian. (Superman III anyone?)

Since they're rehashing Dru-Zod, should have had Jax-Ur as a foil to him this time around. (Interesting character, Jax-Ur; got sentenced to imprisonment in the Phantom Zone before Zod because he blew up one of Krypton's moons, the one called Wegthor.) They do have Faora this time, who Ursa was based on.

And now Larry Fishburne plays Perry White.

Brainiac was originally to be the villain in Superman III. Indeed Nolan and crew toyed around with having Lex Luthor and Brainiac as the villains in this upcoming film, but apparently they decided to go with Zod.

They do have Faora this time, who Ursa was based on.

I don't know why they bothered to rename her in Superman II, maybe they figured "Faora" was too hard to pronounce?

If Man of Steel does well enough to have a sequel, I think Lex Luthor will definitely have to show, and perhaps Brainiac or even Darkseid.

Are you like a "wart" who bases his life on "segregation" in American society? are you into denying certain people in American society the right to exist? seems so.....cause you find diversity so radical it eats your insides real good.
