Bee Gees' singer Robin Gibb dies after cancer battle

Bee Gees' singer Robin Gibb has died following a lengthy battle with cancer, his family have said.

British-born Gibb, 62, had been battling colon and liver cancer.

Gibb's musical career began when he formed the Bee Gees with his brothers Barry and Maurice in 1958.

The group is among the biggest-selling groups of all time with hits spanning six decades including Stayin' Alive, How Deep Is Your Love, Massachusetts and Night Fever.

Dated February 2012.

Ronnie James Dio was hopeful about recovering from his stomach cancer and going back on tour with Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler three months before he died, as well.

Sad news. That leaves Barry as the last Gibb brother. I remembered their debut back in 1967 - "New York Mining Disaster 1941 (Have You Seen My Wife Mr.Jones?)" - the radio stations were playing it up as a Beatles offshoot of some kind. Their early days were eclectic for sure (with gems like "Lamplight", "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You", "The Singer Sang His Song", "Sinking Ships" in addition to their AM hits). Not too often does a band completely reinvent itself and go on to a bigger career than they originally had.

While I hate when people make blanket staements, I just want to say that the Bee Gees had a few good songs "pre-Disco". With that said, I also liked some of their "during Disco" and "post-Disco" material as well.

My favorites "pre-Disco":

I wasn't too fond of their stuff from the 60's, however...

Good point. I'm probably not familiar enough with their pre-disco stuff to say that I hate all of it, but of what I've heard I didn't care for most of it. "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" is ok I guess.

I admit I have a fondness for the two songs I posted because of the memories I equate with those songs..."Lonely Days" reminds me of listening to WABC on a transistor radio under my pillow late at night, and "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" was played on the radio in the bus I rode in day camp back in the summer of '71... :-)

"How do you Mend..." is pretty sappy, even for a love song. My favorite song of theirs is "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Eliiman. It's a top 2 disco song imo.

Exhibit A: Everyone cashing in on the sound. Nothing was safe from the "disco infection":

Exhibit B: Bad musicians or non-musicians getting hits for novelty songs which capitalized on the disco craze:

Disco reached oversaturation by 1980. Much like glam metal hit in 1991, opening the door for Nirvana and grunge.

It was their "B" sides that stood out in the pre-disco era. But you'll never hear a single one of them on the radio. A towering ballad like "I Can't See Nobody" would have been #1 had it been released as an "A" side. The "A" sides were noteworthy in their own right. The eerie chord changes in "Holiday" (back and forth from minor to major) still give me the creeps. And there are sappy ballads galore - the quivering drama of "Words" and "I Started A Joke" - but they redeemed themselves with another song in the same vein - the keening "First of May". The stinging lead guitar breaks in "Jumbo" came right out of left field. And there was the standard pop stuff like "To Love Somebody" and "I Gotta Get A Message To You". I never understood how they could score a hit with a song called "Massachusetts" (name five other songs with states as their titles!) but that little ditty had staying power. And then there was the debut and the comeback - "New York Mining Disaster 1941" is still one of the strangest songs I've ever run into - and "Lonely Days", along with "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" are both classics. Beyond these, the output was uneven at best (ever tried to listen to "Odessa"?).

The Disco songs - "Nights on Broadway" and "You Should Be Dancing" (with its savage guitar break) are also well worth a listen. "Stayin' Alive" too - noteworthy for Maurice's piledriving bass line.

I still prefer their pre disco era work more than the latter. Their debut album in 1967 titled "Bee Gees 1st" with hit song NY Mining Disaster 1941 fit in with late 60's album rock radio.

Their disco rebirth and what followed is what people remember them the most for.
