Sarkozy has conceded. This could be a great opportunity for the US to attract business from France.

There was over 80% voter turnout in France. Unlike here in the US, people in Europe are active participants in the political process, voting diligently and often. This is the kind of voter involvement we should have here at home. Francois Hollande, the Socialist President-elect, understood this and appealed directly to the voters who were looking for change in government. This is how democracy is supposed to work.

There are now calls for early elections in Israel (from Netanyahu) and Greece (from just about everybody). The Left seems to be in the ascendant in geopolitics.

fiogf49gjkf0d
You clearly don't understand why Netanyahu is calling early elections. It has nothing to do with an ascendant Israeli left wing, because the left wing parties that make up the opposition right now have been pretty irrelevant as of late. In fact, it is quite the opposite, he is calling elections because he and his government are popular, so they are trying to maximize on that popularity to be reelected.

That doesn't change Netanyahu's rationale for calling for early elections, nor does it change the fact that the Israeli left is largely irrelevant these days.

The "freedom" of capital flight is the problem. If a business trise to undercut European Recovery by "taking their ball and going home" it is the duty of our government to punish their shockholders. DESTROY THIS SO CALLED FREEDOM. Freedom is being able do things like photographing trains without some gutless coward pig or gutless coward pig lover getting in your face, not about fat cats sabotaging the world economy for the Communist Chinese.

Spain was doing just fine WRT its budget and domestic spending. They had a surplus. Real estate speculation took them down. Then austerity was demanded of them, and the whole thing fell apart. Now they're into a double dip.

Yes, it's how it's supposed to work but this was an entire anti-Sarkozy reaction, not a pro-Hollande one.

This guy will be just as unpopuar.

Had he not been a criminal, Dominique Strauss-Kahn was the only hope for a coherent center-left policy in France.

The center-right UMP continues to have the majority in Parliament.

France does not operate on the parliamentary system like most European countries.
It's closer to the American system where you can have divided government.

He will have to appoint a conservative PM to run the day-to-day stuff. Essentially a co-President.
