Sean Harris, senior pastor of the Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, greenlit parents to punch their kids to "squash like a cockroach" any stereotypically gay behavior. The website Good As You, which first reported the story, posted a clip of the homophobic sermon online. "Dads, the second you see your son dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist. Man up. Give him a good punch. OK?" Harris preached in the audio. "And when your daughter starts acting too Butch you rein her in." Harris told the Fayette Observer that he doesn't actually advocate hitting children, and was just joking in his sermon. "If I had to say it again, I would say it differently, no doubt," Harris told the paper. "Those weren't planned words, but what I do stand by is that the word of God makes it clear that effeminate behavior is ungodly. I'm not going to compromise on that." On Sunday, religious leaders around the state preached support for North Carolina's Amendment One, which would ban same-sex marriage and civil unions in the state constitution. The amendment will come up for a vote on primary election day May 8. Nearly all other Southern states already define marriage as being between one man and one woman in their state constitutions. While the majority of North Carolinians support the measure, a recent Public Policy Polling poll suggests the opposition is gaining momentum. |

I found it to be self serving and disingenuous as contrasted to my "pre fab" apology DTG 271830Z MAY12 which, by any measure, is sincere and can be used by anyone for any purpose at any time. It has been proven that hitting the gay out of kids is highly ineffective and rarely if ever produces the intended result (see Harvard/NIH Journal of Neuro-Constructive Behavior, "Hitting the Gay Out of Kids", Ralph, Janet C. [PhD Disertation under Vanguard] and Flenco, Mitchell [Adjunct Professor of Sociology - Princeton University Institute of Advanced Study], Summer 2010, p.16-29). I work with an openly gay person in one of my jobs, go to business and non business social events all the time with he and his significant other, I am friends with others, and know plenty of gay people. No. But if he was my son, I wouldn't love him any less. I obviously would be somewhat disappointed, even unhappy for a bit, as all the dreams a parent have for a kid, getting married, finding a wife, getting a family of his own would be gone. But I would get over it, and accept it, and love him just as much....and be happy for him.After the initial shock and disappointment, it turns around to acceptance and happiness. |
