At Yesterday's OWS Protests In Union Square...

The TWU was in attendance. Not quite the "jobless, worthless leeches on society" some people here have characterized OWS as...just sayin'...

So because the TWU "was there", it means that the kind of people at OWS in general are "not quite the jobless, worthless leeches" type?? What in the world are you talking about?

Organized labor comprises a considerable segment of the OWS movement, as it has from the beginning. The "kind of people" participating in OWS activities are often employed members of the 99%, as opposed to the mischaracterization of them as jobless bums in the street. The TWU, UFT, 1199, CWA, 32BJ, IBEW, Actors' Equity, 802, AFTRA, DC 37, and ILU, to name but a few labor unions out of many, are a constant presence among OWS protesters.

In addition, as many people posting here are members of the TWU or other labor unions, it is perhaps enlightening to show them that many of the "Jobless, worthless leeches" at OWS they complain about, are, in reality, their co-workers.

No, I'm not. Have you ever even seen an OWS event firsthand? Most of those taking part are not "homeless wretches", nor do they look like that. Besides, it is the right of every American to protest, homeless or otherwise. Stop your word humping; it's disgusting.

I would venture to say that as labor issues were a central theme of yesterday's OWS events, the TWU was right to have a very public presence there. I do think the TWU will be appropriately diligent about their contract with the MTA. There is a Mayoral election coming up, which I think makes the political climate favorable for the union. TWU members as a voting bloc are fairly reliable, not something a candidate wants to alienate.

As for the call center, I think that comes down to one of the bugaboos of our time: do you get a human or a machine when you call them?

fiogf49gjkf0d
"Socialist rhetoric"? Please. Think about it. By having a visible public presence at an event whose central theme is organized labor, the TWU is raising awareness about its members, who take the 99% (who buy Metrocards and vote on transit issues) to and from work, school, and recreation. The public elects politicians who may be favorable to the TWU's cause, (and who appoint the MTA board members with whom the TWU must do business), so I think it behooves the union to be seen at events like OWS.

Because multiple people here, TWU members and non-TWU members, don't seem to see the supposed benefits that going to this rally provides to the union's image. I, for one, generally support the supposed ideas behind the OWS movement. However, they are so far off message much of the time and cause so much vandalism, damage to public property, and are a nuisance in other ways, that it is hard to support their cause while I go to work day in and day out and have done quite well for myself considering the economic climate in the US right now (including a 6000 mile move to get the best job opportunity that I had at that time). I was perplexed as to why the ATU in Washington, DC was at the Occupy rally there yesterday, and still don't get why the TWU in New York is going to rallies organized by divisive "organizations" (to the extent OWS is an organization) when TWU's public standing is pretty low as it is from what I know.

Huh? Where do I come into this? You wrote "the "jobless, worthless leeches on society" some people here have characterized OWS as". It's those people, as well as anyone else who shares those views, as well as any one who has much less extreme views of OWS yet still views them negatively, who I am speaking of. I think that some/,any of them would think less of the TWU for participating in the OWS events yesterday. And since you already admitted that some people look negatively upon OWS, it is delusional of you, as I said, to think that people wouldn't think less of the TWU for participating.

Its very ironic that the TWU leadership support the right of freedom of speech for the protestors but see what they do to each other if they try to speak or write about the wrongs they are doing to the membership. Then they will go to any means to shut their opponents up.

Hey, word-humping troll

Once again, not only do I not do that, but there was no such word humping in this post or thread.

I was describing the way OTHERS here have characterized OWS.

Obviously. Why would you think some one doesn't know that?

Your words "homeless wretches" are yours alone.

You = reading comprehension fail. You used "jobless, worthless leeches on society" and jobless bums and "Jobless, worthless leeches" to describe how others apparently view the OWS people. In my post, I paraphrased that by saying "homeless wretches". I was referring back to what you wrote.

Take ownership of your behavior.

Behavior? I was paraphrasing what you wrote. What about that does your small mind not comprehend? The whole point of this thread is discussing what you wrote in the original post.

??

It's a pretty reaching paraphrase, I admit that. It was due to the logistics of my posting situation. If the situation were different, I could have easily gone back and reread what you wrote in order to use either your exact words or something closer to what you said. But it shouldn't have been difficult for anyone to figure out that I was referring back to the descriptions you used in the first couple posts in the thread -- you know, since (AGAIN) that's what the whole thread is about.
