The Hitlery Channel |
|
Posted by Spider-Pig on Tue May 1 18:34:34 2012 The History Channel last Saturday Night ran a two part, four hour documentary film about the Third Reich. While I liked to make fun of Hitlery back in the day, the documentary brought back nostalgic feelings about when the History Channel actually lived up to its name. Hitler is History; Pawn Stars and Ax Men are not. |

How many actual movies are shown on American Movie Classics or Home Box Office? When were music videos last shown on Music Television? |

The big advantage of the third Reich and the Second World War from any documentary maker’s point of view is that there are reels and reels of archive footage. And the events are sufficiently far in the past to be less controversial than, say, Korea or Vietnam. There are some good documentaries about earlier conflicts, but they have to relay on photographs and diagrams, which means that the makers have to try harder to keep the viewer’s attention. |

At least AMC, HBO and MTV are known by initialisms that could mean anything (like CBS, NBC, ABC). I'm not really saying that it's wrong, I just regret making fun of them before because it could have been worse and is. |

There's also H2, but with shit like Ancient Aliens it too is a bit of a joke. However, I do like American Restoration. It's the only History Channel reality show I watch regularly. |

The only non reality show worth watching is the Modern Marvels episodes, but after over several hundred episodes, the topic material is just not as interesting anymore.Nat Geo is the same. How many 'locked up abroad' and fishing shows can they have? |

It's also well documented by film. These two things make it an ideal subject for a television show. WWII is also an uncomplicated subject (unlike WWI). There was clearly a good and evil side. There was a clearcut victor and a clearcut loser. In fact, had someone wrote a book in the 1920's explaining the future exactly as it eventually panned out, every publisher would have rejected it as too unbelievable and too "Hollywood". |

I read somewhere that the Nazis kept meticulous records of The Final Solution because Hitler wanted to eventually open a museum dedicated to the study of a "vanished race", meaning the Jews. In every country captured by the Nazis, some Jewish religious artifacts were looted by German soldiers for museum purposes and the rest were burned. |
