Obama appointee quits after GOP seizes on ‘crucify’ remarks to describe oil, gas enforcement

By Associated Press, Updated: Monday, April 30, 2012 12:20 PM
WASHINGTON — The Obama administration’s top environmental official in the oil-rich South and Southwest region has resigned after Republicans targeted him over remarks made two years ago when he used the word “crucify” to describe his approach to enforcement.

In a letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson sent Sunday, Al Armendariz says he regrets his words and stresses that they do not reflect his work as administrator of the five-state region including Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Republicans in Congress had called for Armendariz’ firing, after Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe highlighted the May 2010 speech last week as proof of what he refers to as EPA’s assault on energy, particularly the technique of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

Several disputed contamination cases in Texas have helped stoke environmental concerns over fracking.

The AP's motto: We Leave No Bias Behind. This statement is false.

What is false about the statement?

There were readings in Texas that indicated high levels of unpleasant chemicals. The EPA guy shot from the hip and (almost certainly wrongly) accused the gas drilling company of causing the problem. The EPA accusations certainly "stoked" environmental concerns over fracking. The article makes it clear the accusations are disputed.

And here I thought political correctness was a left-wing disease . . .

He would have gotten away with the remark if his legal actions hadn't embarrassed the agency as well. He jumped the gun and filed unjustified proceedings against a gas company for things that were later proven not to be their doing.
