Let me get ahead of this story and offer this mea culpa to one Delmon Young. I always carry with me a written statement that can be used by practically anyone at anytime for any purpose. I tailored it for this particular incident."Good (morning/afternoon/evening) and thank you for allowing me this opportunity to address these serious allegations. I would first like to begin by apologizing to my family who raised me to always be considerate of others and to carry myself with dignity - I have failed you. To my friends for their unconditional support and encouragement - I have let you down. To the Detroit Tigers organization and my teammates who I have had the privilege to work both for and with over these last few years - I have embarrassed you. To the great city of Detroit and the fans who call it home - I have caused untold grief and sorrow. Last but not least, to Delmon Young for the pain and humiliation I have brought upon myself. My intent is not to offer excuses, for the simple fact there are none, but rather an explanation and that starts with L-I-Q-U-O-R. That was not Delmon Young last night. It was someone I do not recognize. It was someone whose sensibilities were altered or otherwise corrupted by some unspoken evil. It was someone who fell off the wagon. It was someone who encountered an obstacle but failed to negotiate it. Now, I shall. It is all about getting back up. All I can ask is to be forgiven even though I realize forgiveness must be earned. To that end, I will redouble my efforts to remain sober by attending counseling for as long as it takes. Furthermore, I will be more sensitive to the pain and suffering I caused through my choice to use ill chosen and hurtful words. From this point forward I will seek to better understand and accept those whose ethnicity and racial traits and cultural practices and religious upbringing differ from mine. To the extent I am a product of the deep South, a place that I love dearly but a place that has seen its share of prejudice and blind hatred. I should have known better and, rest assured, I will be better. In closing, I want to apologize to all the Semites out there. Beyond that, on advice of counsel I will have no further comment on this matter pending the outcome of the investigation. After all is said and done, my actions will speak louder than any words and I hope to be judged on that basis. Thank you. |
