The problem is that you have to buy a car with Sirius and not XM for that. They still haven't made a universal car radio. Satellite radio might be more useful if they came up with a universal radio or merged the networks.

This is big. Probably not that big among the OTChat crowd, but those stations were forever rivals.

It was disappointing over the last few years to see them go with more and more syndicated programming -- and it seems like the combined station will be just as bad.

Lots of greats on those stations over the years -- including the inspiration for my listed email address.

Useless? I wouldn't call having literally hundreds of channels to listen to, of every type and genre, for $14 per month, useless. Add to that the fact that you never "lose the signal" of the station you're listening to.

If I'm paying money for music, I could use Rhapsody, or Pandora (which is actually free) or just buy the songs on iTunes or from Amazon.

You "lose the signal" in the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels. You don't lose terrestrial radio down there.

That's true, you don't. But those are very brief signal losses. If I'm upstate with my car, I can't get WCBS-FM. Even powerful stations like WFAN fade out past Rockland or so.

And satellite has more than music. A lot more. There's even a number of liberal talk radio stations, unlike on terrestrial radio.

Be interesting to see how NY market responds to an FM sports station. Sports and conservative commentary are the two formats making the transition to FM in recent years. Rock, Jazz, and other formats are fading out.

Music formats in general are dying out because of the outrageous licensing fees by the recording industry which don't take into account the actual profitability of individual stations. It's just getting too expensive for non-large groups and locals to "spin records" anymore. If you're a satellite download to transmitter, it's the group owner's headache. Talk is cheap. Literally. :(

Rush paid just like WWF paid to be on television. Paid syndication was the trend back then. Today, it's "cash plus barter" or straight barter for both industries.

I find it interesting that Tribune gave Bill Cunningham his own daytime talk show. That guy is to the right of Rush Limbaugh.

No surprise. Look into Sam Zell, the scumbag who owns the company. He's to the right of Olog. :)

He also owns the LA Times and if anything they've gone more left since he bought them.

Just found out about this yesterday. I am a fan of 98.7 Kiss FM. I grew up listening to them when they was playing rap music(before Hot97). Still listened to them till this day, even they are simulcasting with 'BLS. I'm going to miss them.
IMO, THE FAN got sports radio on lock in NYC. I only listen to Michael Kay and Stephen A. Smith on ESPN radio.

LOL, I go back to when they were 99X (WXLO), playing Top 40 in the mid-70s :) (the change to Kiss-FM came a few years after I moved from NYC).

Does Hal Jackson still do the Sunday morning classics on 107.5? (Is Hal Jackson still alive? I thought he was pretty old back in the 80's, but I think he was still at it as of 6 or 7 years ago)

Back in the 80's, the local hip hop scene was divided between loyalty to the 2 stations. KISS went for the new gangsta/new jack sound pretty early in the 90's and WBLS then gained it's rep as the station for older urban listeners it never really shook.

My friend produced the CD "KISSing after dark" a long time ago.

How do you think ESPN will do on FM in NYC?

Yes, some talk radio is horrible. But with record dollar amounts being spent on campaigns, it's attractive to radio groups looking to cash in.

Honestly, IDK. I'm going to listen to Michael Kay in about a hour or so and see if there's any mention of the move......
